DO I NEED SECURITY SOFTWARE ON MY COMPUTERS?
A good portion of our issues come from zero day vulnerabilities which nobody except the malicious entities are familiar with. A zero day vulnerability is like a secret passage into a castle that the defending forces know nothing about. However, the invaders do know about it and they can use it to compromise the security of the castle from its very center. One such example is the recently published bug on OS X High Sierra allowing full system access without account credentials. It can even be exploited remotely which is extremely dangerous. Going back to our castle example, the invaders don’t even have to be outside your gate to have full access to the castle. Windows also has had its share of zero day vulnerabilities that allow invaders to use your computing device without your knowledge. So yes, you need security software on your devices. That includes desktops, laptops, tablets (apple, android, and kindle fires), and phones (apple, android, and any others). Android users can press the panic button since somewhere around 80% of mobile device infections have occurred on android devices. Another issue is we often ignore the fact that what we are letting these things into our computer.
IS AN ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM ENOUGH?
No. If you think about it that makes sense. A castle has a multilayered approach to security. There’s the terrain, a moat, walls, arrow slits, and patrols inside and out. Our computers and networks are no different. Your last line of defense is actually the people on the walls shooting the arrows, stabbing people with pointy sticks, or using the old laundry to repel the invaders. This last line of defense is our antivirus software and ourselves. So what should we put in between ourselves and the invaders?
