how do i protect my family while they are online?
As adults we are responsible for providing an environment in which our children can learn and grow. This can include giving them the best tools possible to enable their growth and education. What we might not be completely aware of are the side effects associated with introducing technology into the lives of our families. I believe that we can use technology as a blessing in our lives rather than a curse. First, the conversation between the parents needs to take place and they need to come to an agreement on your family's plan. Second, have a 1-on-1 conversation between a parent and the child regarding what's expected of each side (the parent(s) and the child). You should also have a general conversation with the entire family if you have more than one child in the home. Third, use the free tools that OpenDNS provides to help families protect their homes.
Content filtration is not a solution on it's own, but it is where every family can and should get started. Why should we start with OpenDNS though? The cost is a great value since it is FREE. From the technical aspect it's a great boon since you can customize and use up to 50 categories for filtering. It also can be configured to protect against malicious sites that will attempt to collect and use your family's or your own personal information. I have used it for over a year and more recently have begun using it again since my children are getting older and will begin using technology more very soon.
This is a guide that will walk you through how to setup OpenDNS for your family today. I will show you how to configure a Netgear router and a CenturyLink modem/router to use the service OpenDNS provides for free.
